New Chalet building work

After a busy spring working at the turf farm onlineturf we can turn our attention to the new building of the chalet in the garden of Chalet le Coffy.
Building is going well and will be completed ready for Christmas. The glass is now in and tiling starts at the end of the month inside.
The new chalet has no name as yet but has fitted in beautifully next to the existing chalet.
We will be taking furniture to the new chalet in early September in a van driven from our home in the North west of England. The drive will take some 17 hours and is quite a drive.

Crepe Tuesday, Mardi Gras in Morzine

The traditional Mardi Gras, (Tuesday Grease) or Pancake Day, as it is called in the UK, was celebrated today in Morzine. The carnival starts with a procession from the church and walks up to the tourist office. Dressing up was the order of the day with even the lift operators dressed in costumes across the mountain.

Hot chocolate and biscuits were served for all and the festival ended with the traditional burning of the "king of the carnival"

Skis to Snowboard in Morzine

After many years of skiing and growling at the snowboarders the time came today for me to give it a go. I hired the boots, well more like slippers, and a snowboard. Booked a lesson from the snow school in Morzine and off I went. My instructor was Christophe Gandy, a talented instructor who make the process easy. After some new terms including, Duckfoot, Backside, Frontside, Fakie , Goofy footed, Regular footed, Toeside turn I was away and after 3 hours had really got the feel for it. It is like gliding over the snow and quite an amazing feeling. Just as the confidence grows gravity reminds you with a bang, just how difficult boarding really is.
A big thank you to Christophe from the snow school for making it such an enjoyable day.

Grand Ourse, Mont Chery, Altitude 1752M

Giant cheesecake in Grande Ourse

A little piece of Cornwall can be found high in the French Alps. The Grande Ourse (Great Bear) restaurant is owned by the Venning family from Cornwall. A range of genuine Cornish pasties are imported and served in this splendid establishment. For those who like their food a little spicy the chicken balti pasty is a must. The staff are friendly and attentive and only too willing to recount their conger eel fishing adventures. The restaurant is to be found three quarters the way up Mont-Chery Mountain which can be reached via Les Gets near Morzine. As the nearest ski lift is currently closed be prepared for a slight detour to reach this little oasis. If Gordon Ramsey ever fancies a skiing trip we are sure this family would give him a warm welcome.

Husky race in Morzine

Rain deer
Ice carving

Hiskies runing to Morzine tourist office

The annual husky race La Grande Odyssee started today. Instead of the usual snow clearing of the roads there was snow tipped onto the roads making a track from the Church to the tourist office. Due to rain the race is postponed until tomorrow, but the huskies were out running up and down from the church to the tourist office.

They are in a pack and on one trip there was a small pet family dog on a lead watching. The huskies left the track, dragged the small, pet dog onto the snow and badly mauled it. It was the pack instinct, but they were very ferocious.

On a happier note there were ice carvings from Christian Burger, where he carved a husky, and an Indian. Also, there were some wigwams, reindeer, and maple syrup was served warm, laid on a bed of snow and twirled around a lolly stick whilst soft. It was delicious.

Morzine ski lifts open

The full Morzine and Porte du Solei ski area opened today, 22nd Dec. The snow was amazing with well over a metre of snow over the area. The resort of Morzine suddenly got busy yesterday with lots arriving for the Christmas holidays. It is such a contract to last year's snow conditions, with temperatures down to -14 one day last week.

I met up with an English group and had some excellent skiing across the mountains, including my favourite Chamossiere, a lovely red run.
All those on the mountain this Christmas, it really will be a white Christmas. Enjoy!

Morzine chalet for sale. 780,000 euros

Le Coffy is to be sold during 2008, and a new chalet is to be built. We have planning permission to buils a 137 Sq M chalet in the garden of le Coffy. The new building will be ready for Christmas 2008. The details of the chalet sale can be found on http://www.chaletlecoffy.co.uk/chaletforsaleinmorzine.php

A beautiful, traditional chalet for sale in excellent location. It is a wooden construction and has a stone roof. The chalet was built in 1999 so has all modern facilities and doesn’t require any renovation. It benefits from a central village location, although the chalet is quiet with superb views of Pointe de Nyon and the Pleney. It has a south facing lawned garden with a large sunny deck terrace. The chalet has two garages; however a car is not necessary in the resort, especially in the winter.

Feu De Lac Montriond

The festival at Lake Montriond ( Saturday 11th August) was attended by hundreds of people and statred with picnics, BBQ's and beers. We arrived at 2.00 pm and had a swim and hired a canoe. Good value at 13 euros for the hour.
Glowing candles were spread on the top of the lake and they drifted down the lake as the night went on. A paragliding display entertained all just before dark, with some pretty impressive stunts, althoiugh some missed the target and landed in the lake.
One even did a free fall and pulled a reserve shoot.
There were stalls selling food, drinks, hand crafted items, with many activities for all. The only problem was the parking and some had to walk several miles to get to their car.
The fireworks were the main event lasting for 30 minutes. It was without doubt the most impressive display I have ever seen, even better than the Disney land display, which says something for the tiny village of Montriond.
Highly reccomend this event for next year!

Paragliding lessons

Learning to paraglide
During a week in August, I was lucky enough to take part in a four-day paragliding course held on and around the mountains of Morzine. The course is suitable for anyone capable of taking 12 paces, although a fear of heights is not recommended!
Before this course I had never flown, but was guided carefully and safely through everything from unpacking the canopy to attatching it properly to my harness, through to doing some smaller "nursery" flights and finally several larger flights of approximately 200m. The picture above shows the first of my big flights, which I found to be an exhilerating experience.

Cascade Adventure

Morzine Cascade Adventure
After 3 days of rain we took to Cascade Adventure at the Morzine Adventure park.

It costs 17 euros per child and 22 euros per adult. The park offers zip wires, monkey bridges, ropes, ladders, swings, stirrups and all high up in the trees. Safety seems good with carabina clips to safety ropes all around the park. It's suitable from age 6 with an instructor to adults. The circut takes just over an hour to get round. It is exciting, challenging and great fun. It is a 20 min walk from the chalet, or you can drive to Nyon car park and then just a few minutes walk. The cascading waterfall is well worth a look and is right by the park.

There is no need to book, but the phone number for advise and reservations is 0450 38 28 42 or the french mobile 0683 19 21 18

Half Term Feb 07

Today saw some fresh snow falling over Morzine-Les Gets, a welcome change from the poor conditions so far this season. With this fresh snow came some deep powder, as expected of Morzine at this time of year. We were lucky enough to find 60cm of powder in some places, near the lift D'Atray. The picture to the left shows what the conditions were like.

The "skiing through the ages" ski display is on this evening, at 18:30 on Le Pleney. This is one of my favourite shows in Morzine and features ESF instructors showing how ski technique and style of equipment has changed over the last 70 years. It is a chance for the instructors to show off their talents. There is free Vin Chaud at the end of the display.

Cafe Chaud, great bar in Morzine.

Probably my fovourite bar in Morzine is Cafe Chaud. It is located right next to the Chalet and the two new bar men this season are patrick and Nicolas. Happy hour is from 4.00 to 6.00 and during this time you get 2 drinks fo the price of 1. Well worth a visit!!
The bar is open until 1.00 and is a mix of French and English. Dont forget to also try out the restaurant, which is one of the best.

Morzine Ice rink, and Christmas ski conditions.

Morzine is installing a great new ice rink, located in front of the Tourist Office in the center of Morzine. It is near completion and is due to open On Monday 25th December. There is not enough snow in Morzine for skiing in the village, but the snow is pretty good in Avoiriz, and I skiied again there today. Take the Super Morzine bubble to access avoriaz, or the bus from the Tourist office to Les Prodains and takes about 5 mins. From Les prodains the 64 person Telecabine takes you to Avoriaz.

New lift at Nyon

A new lift has been installed at Nyon, from the restaurant at the top on the Nyon cable car to the base on the red run that comes down from the top of Nyon. It's a 4 man chair, or do I have to call it a 4 person chair to be politically correct. It replaces an old button run and makes the resturant, which is very good, more accessible. The new lift is called Les Raverettes. It's a blue down the new lift and a blue and green run can be taken all the way back to Morzine from here.
This is just a small part of the local Morzine / Les Gets ski region.

Morzine Fire Oct 2006

We were up the mountains in Nyon when we saw what looked like a cloud in the valley, over Morzine. As we drove down back into Morzine it was obvious that the cloud was infact smoke, and not an inversion as we first thought. A chalet was on fire, right next to the supermarket Shopi.
Four fire engines arrived and the fire was soon under control. You can see fire fighters on the top two balconies. The chalet was having some renovation and a grinding wheel caused a spark to light newspaper in the roof space, it quickly spread across the whole roof space causing major damage.
It's good to know Morzine can find so many fire engines from other local villages so quickly.

Next trip Dec 9th to Morzine

Well my next trip to Morzine is Dec 9th to 23rd. I have some spare rooms in the chalet so if anyone is looking for some lodgings I might be able to offer a good deal. Hoping for some early snow in Avoriaz or Morzine, we will have to wait and see.

Half term

We are heading home later today after a great week at the Chalet. The weather has been so hot, on one day the garden thermometer recorded 43 degrees in the sun! Extra logs were delivered getting ready for the cold winter nights.
We had no luck setting up the web cam, as we had faulty parts supplied in the UK. For now we are publishing other web cam images on our web cams link.
Saturday we walked up Nyon, which was a hard walk, and recognised the runs which are so much easier to ski in the winter.
On Sunday we drove to Chatel, along the Thonon road. The village was pretty quiet, but when we ski over there this winter it will be lively again. Driving home we came over the top road via "Col de Corbiere" which was so beautiful. There was a huge building development right on the top, building perhaps 100 new chalets. That said there is plenty of building work going on here in Morzine with cranes all over the town. Constructors are trying to get finished before the winter sets in.
When we arrived a week ago I mowed the lawn thinking it was the last time this season, well with all the sunshine it is ready for another cut now, a last job before we go.

Going to Morzine for half term with family.

It is inter season so the town will be quite. We hope to install a remote controled web cam so check back in a week or so and see if its working. In the mean time there are other web cams on http://www.chaletlecoffy.co.uk/webcams.php

Paragliding in Morzine

Morzine as a great place to learn to paraglide, or fly if qualified. We are hoping to have some special paragliding themed weeks in summer 2007.
The landing fields and school is just 100m away from the chalet.
Anyone interested?
